Hey Missoula and Beyond!! We've got some updates for you here at KFGM...
If you’ve recently tuned into KFGM 101.5 FM and noticed signal issues, you're not alone — and we want to keep you in the loop about what’s going on behind the scenes.
KFGM is Missoula’s only full-power community radio station, operating out of the Missoula Public Library and powered by a passionate team of local DJs and volunteers. We’re proud to provide an open platform for independent voices, underground music, and community connection. But like many grassroots projects, keeping things running smoothly — especially our signal — isn’t always easy.
Our transmitter is located on Mount Dean Stone, high above the valley on a tower site shared with Townsquare Media. That location allows us to broadcast beyond city limits and reach as far south as Darby, something that wasn’t possible when we operated at low power. But the mountain setting also means we face difficult access and extreme weather conditions that sometimes interfere with our signal.
Over the past several months, we’ve been working hard to resolve cold-weather-related issues and perform essential maintenance on the tower equipment. Winter access to Mount Dean Stone is no small task — the steep, narrow road winds through avalanche terrain, and equipment failures are common. Repairs often require snowmobiles, patience, and a lot of muscle.
While the logistics have been challenging, we're committed to restoring and maintaining a strong, clear signal for our listeners. We've already made progress and will continue working with engineers to improve reliability moving forward.
This past year marked our first anniversary of full-power broadcasting — a huge milestone for Missoula Community Radio. Since moving into our space at the Missoula Public Library, we’ve welcomed over 45 local presenters who create diverse and dynamic programming. From eclectic music shows to locally produced “noise” sessions airing overnight, our schedule is expanding every month. If you’ve ever wanted to step into the DJ booth and share your voice or your music, we’d love to hear from you.
KFGM exists because of our community — the artists, activists, musicians, and listeners who believe in local, independent media. Whether you're discovering a new underground track, tuning into a show that speaks to your values, or just catching a vibe during your drive, we’re here because you are.
Thank you for sticking with us through the static. Better signal strength is on the way — and so is more music, more voices, and more community radio for Missoula.
